There are over one hundred and sixty resorts scattered throughout the Indian Ocean of the Maldives. All of Maldives luxury resorts are located on their own private islands, making them totally exclusive to resort guests. With over 160 resorts available to choose from, how do you choose a Maldives luxury resort for your vacation? It’s a great question! When deciding on a resort, it’s certainly important to remember that all Maldives resorts are essentially very different to the next – some are ideal for honeymooners and adults only, whilst others are more suitable for families with kids clubs, some are set up exclusively as surf resorts with private surf breaks, whilst others are essentially ‘party islands’. Maldives luxury resorts vary significantly in price from the cheapest resorts in Maldives with garden view rooms starting from USD$200 per night, to private multi-bedroom overwater suites with private pools, gyms and Jacuzzis, costing between USD$700 – $50,000 per night.

Remember to take into account the speedboat or seaplane resort transfer cost. As a general guide to Maldives airport transfers, speedboats usually cost between USD$120-$200pp return, domestic flights approximately $300pp return and seaplanes $400pp return. There are no public ferry services or private speedboats available to Maldives luxury resort islands, so the cost of island transfers is important to consider in your overall Maldives budget. MALDIVES GUESTHOUSES & LOCAL ISLAND HOTELS (BUDGET TRAVEL)

Akiri Surf Retreat – Thulusdhoo Island – Guest House

.

When talking Maldives on a budget, it’s important to note that Maldives budget accommodation is not comparable to budget hotels in South East Asia – you won’t find hostels for $5 a night. What you will find is locally inhabited islands with Maldives guesthouses, catering for travellers on a budget, starting from USD$50 per room per night including breakfast.

Maldives guesthouses are located on Maldives local islands, offering bed and breakfast style accommodation. Again, there is a significant range in the standard of guesthouses in the Maldives so it is essential to do a little research to select Maldives guesthouses that best suit your holiday wishes. Some Maldives guesthouses are two-star properties with basic amenities for backpackers like cold water, whilst others are three-star with hot showers, clean comfortable bedding and daily breakfast.

Local island hotels are also situated on locally inhabited Maldives islands and are a step up from the standard Maldives guesthouses. Hotels are generally multi-storey, have their own restaurants, excursion centres, sometimes gyms and  pools. There are a handful of four-star hotels on local islands, some with rooftop infinity pools, jacuzzis, ocean view balconies. Often hotels will provide all-inclusive packages with accommodation, transfers, meals and excursions. Note there is no alcohol on local islands – you can read 21 Things to Know About Travelling To The Maldives for the First Time here. Hotel stays begin from US$99 per night and can range to US$300 per night.

It’s important to remember each local island is different and offers unique activities and different price points. Some Maldives guesthouses may offer a cheap Maldives accommodation prices, but may be located a far distance from the international airport, meaning it is more expensive to travel to. Guesthouse islands located within close proximity to the international airport are generally cheaper and more accessible to travel to. Remember it can often be expensive to travel long distances via speedboat transfer in Maldives, and local ferries may not be an option.
