The Maldives has always been an incredibly desirable destination but it is mainly known for resorts and high end luxury. Last year, Twosome Travellers James and Alex visited Vakkaru Maldives for their honeymoon. This time around, the couple were surprised to discover that there are actually cheap local islands in Maldives that offer amazing holiday experiences. DAY 1: OUR THULUSDHOO REVIEW
Thulusdhoo Island offers the perfect mix of relaxation, surf and local culture. After our 30 minute speedboat transfer from Malé Airport, our introduction to Thulusdhoo was a nice walk around the shores together, which only took around 45 minutes.
It’s also possible to cruise around the island via bicycle to explore the local village and even catch an incredible sunset at ‘Sunset Point‘. A new bikini beach has recently opened there, and it even has two adjoined overwater swings, perfect for couples and honeymooners! We soon discover the island’s main ‘bikini beach’ is lined with a few boutique hotels, whilst the more affordable properties like Akiri Surf Retreat guest house are scattered across the island. There are cafés, local restaurants and a few shops where you can enjoy local traditional food.
Thulusdhoo Island is also home to two fantastic Maldives surf breaks, ‘Cokes’ and ‘Chickens’ where many tourists visit each year simply to surf! Akiri Surf Retreat guest house can assist you with arranging surfing transfers to all the nearby surf spots and surf lessons are even possible with an experienced Maldives surf guide. It is a great experience to interact with the friendly Maldivian locals as many live on the island all year round, and discovering their way of island life was both fun and enlightening!

The breakfast is enormous and the owner Firushan is fantastic – he is super friendly and enjoys sitting and chatting with us over a meal together. He gave us a really great and fun insight into the true Maldivian culture and had the most fabulous stories to tell us about his time growing up in the Maldives! At Akiri Surf Retreat guesthouse we ate local Maldivian cuisine which included fresh bbq’d fish and other new tastes and spices…it’s unexpected experiences like these that can really make a trip so special and memorable as a couple!
DAY 2 OF OUR THULUSDHOO BLOG: THE EXCURSIONS
The Maldives is all about the water.
Resort or local island, it’s the same mind blowing Indian Ocean that leaves a lasting impression.
We had incredible visibility on an afternoon snorkeling trip from Thulusdhoo Island. We took out a private boat with Firushan (Akiri Surf Retreat guest house owner) and that was a real treat. He knew all of the best spots and even went swimming with us, pointing out multiple green sea turtles and all the thousands of colourful rainbow fish, plus we saw lots of dolphins along the way!
The sandbank was a 20 minute speedboat ride to a beautiful relaxing spot where the two of us really were away from it all – a once in a lifetime kind of experience especially if you’re on a couples holiday at Thulusdhoo – aka your honeymoon!

We left the island feeling like part of the Akiri Surf Retreat guest house family. We really hope to visit this beautiful side of the world again soon and we hope you enjoyed our Thulusdhoo review!
