Vakkaru Maldives review

Newlyweds Alex and James Lock – the Twosome Travellers, share their ultimate Maldives honeymoon review. The UK-Aussie based travel couple, contribute their Vakkaru Maldives review as they discover the earthy-lux aesthetic of the overwater and beach villas, the heavenly spa and experience fine dining at Vakkaru restaurants.

Arriving into Vakkaru Maldives’ private seaplane lounge was a treat in itself for the Twosome Travellers. “Please help yourself” – we were ushered to an array of complimentary treats. A short wait before we stepped aboard the luxury seaplane bound for Baa Atoll. Seated with cold hand towels and fresh bottles of water, our Maldivian pilot told us it would be a scenic 25-minute seaplane flight to Vakkaru.

VAKKARU MALDIVES REVIEW

A musical welcome by the lovely staff, paired with champagne on the arrival jetty was the perfect start to our five-star Maldives honeymoon review of Vakkaru Maldives. Within minutes, we had swapped our Australian winter warms for tropical resort wear to match the postcard -like scenery that surrounded us.

This five-star Maldives honeymoon resort had more than just a touch of class. Opened in Dec 2017, Vakkaru is in the Baa Atoll region of Maldives. Designed for couples and families, it’s already proving a hit with honeymooners too – us being one of them!

Us Twosome Travellers were greeted by our ultimate honeymoon luxury; Hushy, our designated private Butler. He took us for the grand island tour via buggy and talked about life on the beautiful island.

THE OVERWATER VILLAS AND BEACH VILLAS

For our Vakkaru Maldives review, we were lucky enough to honeymoon in both the Beach and Overwater Villas. With 125 rooms, Vakkaru is true to its roots with each room category presenting an earthy yet contemporary Maldivian aesthetic.

It seems Vakkaru would like us horizontal for most of our Maldives honeymoon review, as we take mental notes of the spots we plan to enjoy our book with the complimentary bottle of champagne that just caught my eye!

We had the pleasure of first experiencing the Vakkaru Maldives Beach Villas, an open plan space with an oversized four-poster bed and iPad controlled switches. The bath tub was a statement within itself – circular and free-standing with two adjacent doors leading to a separate shower room. In addition to the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ sinks and outdoor shower, the complimentary toiletries were topped up daily – a lovely unexpected bonus. Stepping outside on to the deck, it’s a short five second stroll to the turquoise waters of the ocean.

After enjoying a few days in the Vakaaru Maldives Beach Villa, we moved to the Vakkaru Maldives Overwater Villas – similar in layout. We were left utterly speechless as we gazed out at the jaw dropping tropical scenery. The balcony doors led directly outside to the overwater ladder down to the azure calm waters, and the view from the bed was exceptionally blue. The overwater hammocks are filled with natural coloured cushions, as are the sun lounges scattered throughout the resort, that hugely outnumber the guests. Our complimentary bicycles were the perfect way to explore the island and take a ride along the board walk enjoying the views.

VAKKARU RESTAURANTS

With four Vakkaru restaurants, deciding where to dine (especially for dinner) took a little thought. Each of the Vakkaru restaurants showcased handpicked produce collected from the fruit, herb and vegetable garden.

Amanny – a beautiful outdoor dining setting is far more stylish than a typical hotel buffet. Breakfast is extensive; beyond bakery goodies and overnight oats, there are at least 10 different food stations at this Vakkaru restaurant, including an egg station with eggs cooked anyway you like, from the basic omelette, to a Benedict lobster. If that’s not enough, stop at the table full of exotic fruits with its own chef, fruit freshly cut into bitesize pieces for convenience.

Lunch is served at Isoletta – one of the four Vakkaru restaurants that focuses on contemporary Italian and other international cuisines. We mostly enjoyed our meals outside by the luxurious pool area alongside the ocean views.

We dined at Vakku, enjoying its seafood and grill menu and for Asian fusion, we sampled the ‘must try’ Tom Yum Geung soup and lobster yellow curry at Onu. Our favourite ‘adult only’ Lagoon Bar is just perfect for honeymooners and sunset lovers – a remarkably blue view, served with sophisticated sushi and sashimi. Finished off with one (or two) scoops of coconut and mango sorbet, complimented with a generous wine and champagne menu. If you’re particularly in the mood for wining and dining, be sure to see the prestigious wine cellar with a collection from all over the world.

FIVE- STAR ACTIVITIES

Facilities are first class including the range of water-sports at Splash – snorkelling, diving, jet-skis, dolphin cruises to name a few. The UNSECO World Biosphere Reserve is the perfect place to encounter manta rays and whale sharks from July to November. We made the most of the incredible snorkelling with sting rays and even witnessed baby black tip reef sharks in the shallows!

Vakkaru also features an incredibly breath-taking over water gym plus tennis and badminton courts. For guests without private pools there is a large pool located near the Isoletta restaurant, suitable for relaxing or some serious swimming. The Parrotfish Club is for children and next door is the Coconut Club’s pool tables and tennis tables for the teens.

RELAXATION AT VAKKARU

The overwater Merana Spa at Vakkaru is more than special. With many facial treatments and relaxing massages, the treatment rooms are complete with glass floors to watch the fish swim by whilst the massage therapists work their magic.

We were treated to a couple’s massage which involved two generous size treatment beds and floor to ceiling windows. Our Vakkaru couples massage began with a relaxing foot scrub followed by an hour long full body massage, in which lavender scents filled the room. A refreshing ginger drink rehydrates us at the completion of our spa treatment, before we enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi and plunge pool all to ourselves, as the sun set. Upstairs is a hairdressing and nail salon, plus other therapy rooms to really pamper yourself.
